Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is Mealworm Frass?
Frass is the nutrient-rich by-product of mealworms—think of it as nature’s micro-fine compost, packed with nitrogen, chitin and beneficial microbes that boost root growth and plant resilience.
How is it different from Worm Castings?
Castings, by contrast, are coarser, lower in nitrogen, and typically chitin-free – without the quick nutrient punch or natural pest-defence kick that frass delivers.
How do I use it on my plants?
Check out our Grow Notes to find out more.
Is it safe for kids, pets, and edible plants (e.g. herbs, veggies, fruits)?
Yes! Our frass is 100 % natural, chemical-free and screened for pathogens, so it’s safe around curious kids, furry friends, and anything you plan to eat.
What’s the shelf life?
12-18 months sealed, cool, and dry. No expiry, no stress.
How does it compare to chicken manure?
Frass is odor-free, ready-to-use, and gentle; chicken manure can smell, needs composting, and may burn roots.
How many pots will 1 packet of Rich Roots cover if I use it all at once?
160 g "Sample" pack: feeds ~32 small pots or ~10 medium pots
480 g "Essentials" pack: feeds ~96 small pots or ~32 medium pots
How many pots could I keep thriving for 3 months with 1 packet of Rich Roots?
160 g "Sample" pack: covers ~10 small pots or ~3 medium pots for 3 months
480 g "Essentials" pack: covers ~32 small pots or ~10 medium pots for 3 months
Are these just rough estimates?
Yep! These are just ballpark estimates – actual servings will vary with your pot sizes, soil mix and how liberally you apply the fertiliser.
Is your packaging recyclable?
Our first batch of pouches was labelled “recyclable” based on supplier information, but we later discovered that their laminated structure (Kraft/MET-PET/CPP) doesn’t meet Australian recycling standards. Although each layer is technically recyclable, the fused material prevents practical recycling. We’ve already switched to a new supplier offering fully recyclable, compostable packaging that meets Australian requirements, and we’re excited to roll these out as our stock transitions. New fully recyclable pouches due Q3 2025.
Disposal Notice: While we continue to explore more sustainable packaging solutions for our single-use rollstock sachets, please dispose of your existing sachets by placing them in your red-lid rubbish bin. If your local council accepts soft-plastic recycling, you may alternatively drop them off at a designated soft-plastics collection point for processing.
Thank you for supporting us as we grow sustainably and transparently.
Do you offer wholesale or stockist options?
Absolutely! We're a small business (est. Q1 2025) and love getting our frass into more green thumbs. Apply for a stockist account today →
