Mealworm Frass for Veggie Gardens and Raised Beds | Rich Roots

An easy way to add nutrients and organic matter to your veggie patch

Growing herbs, tomatoes, chillies or leafy greens? Rich Roots mealworm frass is a dry, low-odour soil fertiliser and amendment made from one ingredient: dried mealworm frass, sourced and packed in Queensland.

It's useful for gardeners who want a simple top-dressing or soil-mixing routine without the strong odour associated with some manure-based products. It complements good soil, compost, watering and plant-specific fertiliser needs; it doesn't replace them all.

How to use it in a garden bed

  • Established beds: start with a light top-dressing of about 50g per square metre, evenly distributed around the root zone.
  • Higher-demand established beds: approximately 50–100g/m² may be appropriate, depending on soil fertility and crop needs.
  • Preparing a new bed: approximately 100–200g/m² can be mixed into the upper 5–10cm of soil before planting.
  • After application: mix lightly into the soil and water in. Reassess around 4–6 weeks later during active growth.

For seedlings, new transplants or nutrient-sensitive plants, start with less. Some Australian natives and other specialist plants have particular nutrient requirements, including sensitivity to phosphorus; use plant-specific guidance before applying any general fertiliser.

How far does a 360g pouch go?

At a light 50g/m² top-dressing rate, one 360g pouch covers approximately 7m² once. Heavier applications will cover proportionately less. For several beds or repeat feeding, choose the existing 3-, 6- or 12-pouch options.

What's in it?

Our independent analysis measured 3.71% nitrogen, 1.13% phosphorus, 1.88% potassium and 38.5% carbon, with additional elements and naturally occurring chitin. As with any natural product, nutrient content varies across batches. It is not a pesticide and we don't promise that it cures specific plant diseases.

From a Queensland mealworm farm to the garden
